the buzz: new fall tv

The sleeve: Cofax coffee

Cofax Coffee will always be near and dear to my heart. Not only do they have some of the best donuts in L.A. (Nicole Rucker you are a goddess) but their coffee is on point. Breakfast burritos are a must too and add the avocado, you can thank me later. Back to the coffee, this shop ain’t for doing work, they cheekily don’t have wifi and tell you to “pretend it’s the 90s” along with covering their outlets. Basically, this is your grab and go on Fairfax and will never disappoint.

MY ORDER: Iced Almond Milk Latte, because they shake it in a cocktail mixer so the almond milk is smooooth and creamy.

the buzz: fall’s top four to dvr (in order of air date)

This Is Us, airs Tuesdays at 10/9c, NBC

This Is Us caught me good. The pilot, which aired September 20th had a great twist and pulled on the heart strings. I’d expect nothing less from writer, Dan Fogelman, who managed to do the same thing in his film Crazy, Stupid, Love (won’t spoil if you haven’t seen it- but do that asap). Although it can be a little soap-y at times, it’s a missing piece to network TV and NBC hit the mark. Plus Mandy Moore and Sterling K. Brown on screen, sign me up!

Easy, all episodes available September 22nd, Netflix

Maybe it’s because I’m from Chicago, but anything that Joe Swanberg releases (Drinking Buddies, Happy Christmas) I’m watching. Chicago-ness aside, Easy is a must watch. It’s sexy, it’s real, it’s fresh.  And because of the variety of characters, I’d be shocked if you couldn’t find one scenerio that was relatable to your life. Each episode follows a different romantically linked couple and their romance-or lack their of. Swanberg had the actors to improvise a lot, allowing each episode to feel like a stand alone piece…except once the 30 minutes are done I just want to watch the next one/want to know more about the couple. Hopefully there’s a second season in the works!

Westworld, Sunday October 2nd 9/8c, HBO

This series, a reboot from the 1973 cult classic movie, has been in the works for a while. When I started in my current acting class, we worked on the audition sides and that was in 2014! But good things take time, no? And Westworld is going to be g r e a t. TV needs a Sci-Fi hit and J.J. Abrams (Lost) along with Jonathan Nolan (Dark Knight, yes Chris’s bro) did just that, and then some. Evan Rachel Wood and Anthony Hopkins are at the helm of this futuristic theme park “Westworld” where people pay to view/interact with human-like robots: think Ex Machina meets The Truman Show meets Mr. Robot with an added element of a fast action video game. Bring on the plot twists.

Good Girls Revolt, episodes avail Friday October 28th, Amazon

Come October 28th, you can find me glued to my TV. Good Girls Revolt is based off Lynn Povich’s novel and takes place at the fictional News of the Week magazine during the 1960s.  I was able to preview the pilot, and it’s like Mad Men meets Newsroom meets The Hour (brilliant BBC show!) meets All the President’s Men but with women leading the way. A stellar and sexy cast of women fighting for their equal say/pay in the workplace, yes, yes yes!

Any other new shows you’re watching the Fall? Let me know!

bites of life: july edition

Well August 1st crept up real fast…where has summer gone?! I’ve been fortunate to travel a few times, see friends and family, and have plenty of pool days. Below is a mini recap of my favorite bites from July! Enjoy.

junior cone: sweet cream and corn almond

sweet: Magpies Soft Serve

Literally juuust made the cut-I went yesterday on July 31st-but this new soft-serve shop in Silverlake (say that 3x fast) is serving up some serious swirls. No shame that I tried nearly all the flavors, but settled on almond corn (made with almond milk) and sweet cream with sprinkles and butterscotch rice-krispies. Safe to say I will be a regular. Plus, waffle cones are freeeee!

Savory: Pie n’ Burger

I made a mini-trek to Pasadena to see if the hype was real for this joint. It is. Dare I say it’s better than Apple Pan? Well for starters you can get milkshakes and the pie selection is more expansive. But back to the burger- it’s a classic with lots of lettuce, tomato, cheese, pickles in every bite, and house made thousand island. Worth the trek!

Coffee: Russ and Daughters

Sometimes there’s nothing better than a hot cuppa coffee in a classic diner mug. My favorite cup this month was also shared with my best friend, Maddie McCormick, while we were traveling in New York. Lox board is a plus too!

Purchase: *tie* Cuyana Saddle Bag and Hat Attack Hat

I’m having a major moment with blush color objects. Hence I couldn’t decide which of these two were a better purchase. Cuyana’s bag is such a great size and feels like a “grown up” bag without being a bajillion dollars. The hat was a welcome addition since I’ve been wanting to steal my friend Jess’s pink hat for a year. Happily found this guy at Club Monaco on sale (feel free to call me a hat lady, my collection is growing).

$- Cava Grill

This fast casual mediterranean spot will be my new go-to if I want a cheap healthy meal. You can make pita wraps and bowls, plus is very customizable. Like you can split your protein and get lamb meatballs AND falafel. Who doesn’t love that?

$$- Bondi Harvest

Hello Aussie dreamland. Tucked away by the Tastemade studios in West LA, Bondi Harvest is a beachy destination. The food is healthy and fresh plus they have indoor and outdoor seating. Note: it’s only open during the week!

I recently went to brunch here and was blown away by the presentation! Not only was it artistic, but the food was bomb. Get the chicken and waffles if you go at brunch and the potatoes! They had me at chive aioli.

EntertainmenT: OUTLAnder and you are a badass

Currently I have the Outlander theme song in my head. I want to be Caitriona Balfe, she’s the extremely talented actress who plays the show’s lead, Claire. In short, it’s a fantasy drama where Claire is transported from 1945 to the 1740s in Scotland. There’s adventure, an epic love story and emotions are high. Already on season two! And last but not least, You Are A Badass. I’ve never read a “self-help” book, but picked this up after hearing a friend sing its praises. It’s an empowering boost and quick read.

the buzz: summer tv

Let me introduce “the buzz” (I know, I know you want to get to my summer TV picks already…go ahead and scroll) but for those of you still reading-yay-this series will highlight two things:

  1. a fun coffee sleeve from a local coffee shop
  2. an even more fun buzz-worthy topic

COFFEE SLEEVE: Alfred Coffee

I happened upon Alfred one of my first weeks in LA. I had never been to Melrose Place, home of the OG location, and fell in love with the street. Alfred has now taken LA by storm, I feel like they are announcing a new location every week (props guys!) but its Melrose Place location still remains my favorite. My GO-TO: almond milk cap topped with cinnamon.

SUMMER TV:

Ah summer TV, even more indulgent than a winter binge because you’re saying “f*ck it” to the sun and staying in-unless you get yourself a summer thunderstorm-aka the best excuse to hole up and watch a new show. So without further ado:

unREAL (Lifetime, Season 2, June 6th) For those of you who are too proud to watch unREAL because it’s a “Lifetime” show, get off your high horse and watch Constance Zimmer and Shiri Appleby kick ass. I was never a fan of the Bachelor(ette) but this scripted show focuses on the bts craziness it takes to produce reality TV. MUST WATCH.

Feed the Beast (AMC, Series Premiere, June 5th) When the billboards started popping up in LA, I was like “is that David Schwimmer?!” The answer is “yes”, and 2016 is proving to be his year. Admittedly I haven’t watched the pilot, though it’s sitting in my queue, but since Mad Men, AMC hasn’t let us down. Here’s looking at you, Ross.

Chef’s Table (Netflix, Season 2, May 27th) I am late to the game on this show, I know, and for someone who loves food as much as I do, how did I miss this? PLUS season 1 just nabbed a James Beard award-so both seasons are lined up- along with a big charcuterie board when viewing.

Animal Kingdom (TNT, Series Premiere, June 14th) Based on the Australian film by the same name, Animal Kingdom is a gritty family-crime drama with Ellen Barkin as the lead. Ellen freaking Barkin. I’d say no more, but John Wells is also behind this show (Shameless, ER) making me want it to be June 14th already.

Wrecked (TBS, Series Premiere, June 14th) I read this script a couple months ago and can’t wait to see how it looks. It’s a survival-comedy about a group of strangers who crash land on a remote island. Think “if Lost had been a comedy and not so confusing”.

Another Period (Comedy Central, Season 2, June 15th) Basically I want to live on this show. Natasha Leggero and Riki Lindhome can do no wrong. Dubbed “America’s Worst Family”, the two play sisters in turn-of-the-century Rhode Island. Lots of awesome cameos.

OITNB (Netflix, Season 4, June 17th) So much has happened on this show’s last couple seasons I don’t even remember where we left off- but I know it was juicy. All the women slay on this show, although I hope we get a little more Matt McGorry this season #majorcrush.

Roadies (Showtime, Series Premiere, June 26th) From Cameron Crowe (Almost Famous, Jerry Maguire) so I have high hopes. Plus Luke Wilson- those brothers man, how do they do it? Showtime calls this “an insider’s look at the reckless, romantic, funny and often poignant lives of a committed group of ‘roadies'”.

Suits (USA, Season 6, July 16th) Oh Suits, how I love thee.  You are such an unrealistic portrayal of a law firm, but whatever, y’all look ballin’. Plus *spoilerish* what’s going to happen to Mike?! Donna with the good hair and Rachel with the good suits, can we be friends?

Mr. Robot (USA, Season 2, July 16th) OH MAN. I am just finishing up Season 1 and can’t wait to see what twists and turns this next season have in store. Creator Sam Esmail directed all 10 episodes which should make this season consistent AF.

Vice Principals (HBO, Series Premiere, July 17th) I already know I’m going to laugh. Billy Murray, Danny McBride, Walton Goggins?! Just the concept alone, two VP’s fighting to take over the newly empty principal’s seat, has me thinking this is going to fill the Summer Heights High gap I’m missing in my life.
